In Mother Tongue, Amy Tan highlights the reality of Chinese immigrants within American society. She shares her perspective as an insider on how her mom’s English was a form of intimacy at home and was seen as broken by society. Even though they both share common subcultures as immigrants, Lee presents another perspective of his experiences by focusing on how many immigrants will often stay silent because they lack English vocabulary. I would have liked them to include the person’s point of view more in the texts, for example, having a passage or a quote from Tan’s Mom would have been great to have a sense of their own opinions and feelings about their own experiences. As for my transcultural interview, I will make sure to let my interviewees’ voice is heard by giving them the opportunity to share their opinions or any experiences related to the topic we’ll be covering.
